Wachau

Sculptured by the river Danube over thousands of years the valley of Wachau presents its narrow and winding beauty in over more than 30 km between the lovely cities Melk and Krems. The combination of it’s beautiful scenery, inspiring landscape and the many cultural places has formed a magnificent recreation area which attracts people throughout the year.

Especially spring and fall are very recommended seasons in the Wachau. To watch the blossoming of the apricot trees in May and to enjoy the festivals accompanying grape harvesting in fall are very impressive moments to share.

The mild climate of Wachau – spring starts here 6 weeks earlier then north of the valley – and the fertile loess soil are the perfect conditions for wine- and fruit-growing (apricots). Already ancient romans cultivated grapes in this area. Today vineyards are beautifully located on the terrasses of the valley growing famous wines like Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Neuburger and Müller-Thurgau.

While in former days shipping the river Danube was extremely dangerous due to the winding segments of the river, today lovely brigdes are crossing at Melk and Krems, ferries for cars can be found in Spitz and Weissenkirchen (source: www.wachau.at).
